Zags clinch fifth consecutive WCC title

Vivian Frieson had 26 points and seven assists to lead the Gonzaga Bulldogs over the Santa Clara Broncos 92-63 at the McCarthey Athletic Center Thursday night, allowing GU to clinch its fifth consecutive West Coast Conference regular-season women’s basketball title.

Courtney Vandersloot added 17 points and nine assists for GU (23-6, 11-2), while Heather Bowman had 15 points and Claire Raap had 11 points.

Lena Gipson scored 21 and Alyssa Shoji scored 14 for Santa Clara (3-25, 1-12). Gipson also had nine rebounds.

The Zags also earned the top seed to the WCC tournament.

Washington State 63, Arizona 56: You can count another monkey-releasing moment off the backs of the WSU program.

Danielle LeNoir led a trio of freshmen in double-figures scoring with 15 points and the Cougars beat the Wildcats at Tucson, Ariz., earning a Pacific-10 Conference season sweep for the first time since 2000-01.

April Cook and Jazmine Perkins chipped in 12 points apiece for Washington State (11-16, 4-12).

Amina Njonkou had 16 points and Beatrice Bofia had 11 points and 12 rebounds for Arizona (10-16, 3-12).

The last conference sweep for WSU was against Oregon eight years ago. The last sweep of the Wildcats came in 1995-96.

Arizona State 55, Washington 32: Danielle Orsillo scored 10 points and the 24th-ranked Sun Devils (21-6, 13-2) won their 13th consecutive game, a Pacific-10 Conference victory over the Huskies (6-20, 2-14) at Tempe, Ariz.

The Huskies have lost 14 of their past 15 games and have lost 20 games in a season for the first time since the 1999-2000 season.

Arizona State’s Briann January (Lewis and Clark HS) had five points, four rebounds, two steals and a game-high four assists.

Sami Whitcomb and Mackenzie Argens scored seven points apiece for Washington, which had its lowest offensive output of the season.

The Sun Devils have beaten Washington 10 straight times dating back to the 2004-05 season.
