Plenty of care for kids, critters
In the North Country area of Elk-Chattaroy, people put a lot of time and effort into nurturing their kids, as well as teaching them how to care for their pets and animals. I would like to share a few options available in the neighborhood.
Busy Bugs Day Care is located in Chattaroy Hills Estates on Chattaroy Road (across from the Chattaroy Fire Station) about a quarter of a mile west of Highway 2. Owner Angie Brown and her staff organize educational activities and a lot of creative fun at this facility. Busy Bugs provides a cheery and comfortable setting for the kids. They accept infants through school-age children. For information on space availability, call Busy Bugs at 238-1211.
Sunshine Daycare and Pre-School is located farther north, about 1 1/2 miles past Riverside Schools, on the west side of North Newport Highway (Highway 2). Sunshine, which was recently remodeled and enlarged, is a beautiful, homey place for kids with a loving atmosphere. It accepts infants, toddlers and preschool children. The friendly, knowledgeable staff provide a fun, educational and social learning environment. For information or to check on space availability, call 292-0703.
If you or your kids have pets or country animals, there are local options for their care and supplies. In Chattaroy, on Highway 2 near Westmoreland Road, is Kountry Kritters Farm & Feed. Scott Riggins’ farm and feed store carries all the supplies necessary to feed and care for your animals. The store offers other services for pets such as onsite dog grooming and monthly onsite vaccinations.
Veterinarian Jerome Leise is at Kountry Kritters the first Saturday morning of each month giving dog and cat shots. He will also insert microchips in your pets. This store also sells kittens and cats (when available) and, from March through June, chickens. Special breed orders in amounts of 10 or more are available. For information, call 292-0703.
North of Riverside Schools, on North Newport Highway and Eloika Road, in the Toner’s Sand & Gravel Building, is Rosha’s Remedies. Owner Rosha Lord has an extensive background in the health and care of horses, dogs and cats. She offers a variety of herbal remedies and vitamin supplements for your animals.
The shop also carries natural wormers, bug sprays and flea powders. If you have any questions about supplies for the health and care of your horses, dogs or cats, call Lord at 292-5258. She also has a big selection of remedies for humans, as well as an array of fresh herbs, spices and blends for epicurean needs.
Located at 10911 Laurel Road on Elk Chattaroy Road is Cameo Grooming. Owners Sheila and Eldon Howell have many years experience working with dogs. They are open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday for your dog grooming needs. Call 292-2691 between 7 and 10 a.m. to make an appointment for your dog.
I would like to remind you all about one of the community’s favorite events coming on Feb. 7. It’s the 10th annual Chili-Chowder Cook-Off sponsored by the Elk Community Park Association. There is a location change this year; it will take place at the Elk VFW Post. More details next time.
