Town’s only store closing up

By Associated Press

ADAMS, Ore. – The bad economy has claimed all the business in a northeastern Oregon town – the Adams Store and Cafe.

Owner Barbara Beamer said rising gasoline prices in the summer dealt the first blow, and business hasn’t picked up since.

Adams is northeast of Pendleton. Beamer said the town now consists of the City Hall, a church and her store, which she’s owned since 2000.

Once upon a time, Adams was a bustling community, but the arrival of Interstate 84 killed traffic and business, Beamer said.

Before Christmas, she made her decision, sending her two employees home for the holidays and closing shop Jan. 6. She planned a sale to move inventory, equipment and fixtures this weekend.

After that, she hopes to sell the 1885 building, which she thinks would make a dandy place for a wine-tasting shop.

“I’ve just reached that point and they’ve made the economy look so gloomy and doomy,” she said. “I’m too old to fight that.”

The cafe served breakfast and lunch, and Beamer kept coffee mugs on a shelf near the coffee machine – each with a name – for the regulars.

Beamer said she used to serve many retired people, but many have died, and the younger people don’t dine as often. They are usually working in Pendleton or another larger city and don’t necessarily have the time to stop by for breakfast or lunch, she said.

“Everything’s changed that way,” she said.
