Broken hand sidelines Mills

Saint Mary’s guard Patty Mills will miss at least four weeks after breaking two bones in his right hand during the Gaels’ loss to Gonzaga on Thursday night.

Mills, the Australian sophomore who leads Saint Mary’s with 18.7 points per game, was hurt just before halftime in the Gaels’ 69-62 loss at Gonzaga. He scored 18 points before getting hurt while attempting to break a fall.

Mills’ injury is a tough setback for the Gaels (18-2, 5-1 West Coast), who are off to the best start in school history. Without his shooting and playmaking, Saint Mary’s shot 10 of 30 in the second half against the Zags.

Saint Mary’s plays at Portland tonight.

Yow’s own video shown at funeral

In a video recorded shortly before her death, longtime North Carolina State coach Kay Yow thanks her supporters and recounts her religious faith.

Yow said: “It has changed my life.”

Yow died last weekend after a two-decade fight against cancer. The video was played Friday at her funeral in suburban Raleigh, a service filled with hundreds of friends, fans and colleagues.

Colonial Baptist Church pastor Stephen Davey said Yow hand-picked almost every element of the service. Davey said Yow “wanted one final chance to challenge and impact all of our lives.”

Johansson, KO’d Patterson, dies

Ingemar Johansson, the Swede who stunned the boxing world by knocking out Floyd Patterson to win the heavyweight title in 1959, has died, a longtime friend said today. Johansson was 76.

Johansson knocked out Patterson in the third round at Yankee Stadium on June 26, 1959, to win the heavyweight title. Patterson avenged the upset loss a year later in the rematch in New York, knocking Johansson out in the fifth round.

Patterson also won a March 1961 rematch with another KO in the sixth round.
