Weighing in

A weekly look at reader comments and reactions to the news

From Www.Spokesman.Com

Readers expressed strong reactions to a story published Saturday about a discrimination lawsuit filed against the Spokane Country Club by a woman claiming she was excluded from organized activities solely because she’s female even though she was required to pay the same membership fee as men. The story appeared in The Spokesman- Review and at spokesman.com, where you can find the full exchange of reader postings on this and other topics.

Seahawk1: I am really getting tired of this type of action by women. There are women workout gyms that men are not allowed. If she really feels this way then don’t join. Leave, there are plenty of other clubs out there for her. Sometimes men just want their own place with the guys. Why do women have to intrude on that? Women get free drinks at happy hour, or have you ever heard of ladies night? Should I sue? I don’t believe that I should have to pay if the women are getting their drinks for free.

Nancy Wilson: Maybe it’s frivolous, maybe it isn’t. I’ve always thought men and women should be allowed exclusive access but in each case it should be known up front before fees are paid. If men and women are charged the same fees and then one group is denied equal access that would be discrimination.

henry hamill: It’s really pretty simple girls, when you joined the club if you didn’t like the majority member rules then don’t join. The club does things their way because they paid to do things their way. If you don’t like what the majority likes quit. So, par your five hole or shut your trap.

AlexK: These comments can’t be serious. Must be the guys from the Club and their wives writing in. Funny. My wife went out there to that Club once and came back laughing. She couldn’t believe that kind of thing still went on. Good to see Spokane growing up.

Abacoeye: I guess the more things change in Spokane, the more they stay the same. Time to join the 20th century. That’ll give you plenty of time to gear up for the 21st century, where everyone else is. I can see why the Aryan Nations liked the area so much.

Bob_Knows: It was a big mistake to allow female members at all. Like Augusta National, they should allow females to attend, but not join. There are many “women only” facilities and activities in Spokane. For example, the hospitals have “women’s health” centers but no “men’s health” facilities at all.
