Filed A former UCLA basketball player is suing the NCAA over its use of former student athletes’ images in DVDs, video games, photographs, apparel and other material. In a federal lawsuit filed Tuesday in San Francisco, Ed O’Bannon says the NCAA illegally has athletes sign away their rights to the commercial use of their images and does not share any of the proceeds from their use with former athletes.
Swapped The Tampa Bay Lightning and the Phoenix Coyotes have completed a three-player NHL trade, with the Lighting sending right wing Radim Vrbata to Phoenix for left wing Todd Fedoruk and defenseman David Hale. Fedoruk, 30, has played in 495 career games. Hale, 28, has played in 263 NHL games. Vrbata, 28, returns to Phoenix. In 2007-08, he played in 76 games for the Coyotes and had career highs in goals (27) and points (56).
Unchanged Former Memphis Grizzlies and University of Memphis point guard Antonio Burks remains in critical condition a day after being shot during a robbery. A spokeswoman for Regional Medical Center in Memphis, Tenn., said there was no change in the medical condition of Burks, who underwent surgery Monday night after he was shot in the lower torso.
Withdraws Defending champion Kenny Perry will not play at the Buick Open next week in Michigan so he can stay near his cancer-stricken mother. Perry’s mother, Mildred, is under hospice care as she battles blood cancer. Perry said he considered pulling out of the British Open last week until doctors assured him that his mother would be OK while he was in Scotland.
Purchased Singer Marc Anthony is the latest music star to join forces with the Miami Dolphins. The team announced that he will become a minority owner. Singer Gloria Estefan and her husband, producer Emilio Estefan, also bought a small stake in the club last month.
Retired French tennis player Nathalie Dechy, who reached the Australian Open semifinals in 2005, is retiring. The French tennis federation said in a statement the 30-year-old Dechy has decided to end her career as she is expecting a child and wants to devote her time to family life. Dechy is currently ranked 88th.
