Softball: National player of the year Danielle Lawrie (pictured above) hit a grand slam and made it hold up with a five-hitter and Washington beat Georgia 9-3 Sunday night in Oklahoma City to earn a spot in the finals of the Women’s College World Series.

The Huskies (49-12) got even for a loss to the Bulldogs (47-12) earlier in the day for the chance to play for the NCAA softball title for the first time in a decade.

Thomas wins Junior PGA

Golf: Spokane’s Chessey Thomas, fresh off her 4A state golf title last Thursday, won the 2009 Pacific Northwest Junior PGA Championship on Sunday at Tumwater Valley Golf Club in Tumwater, Wash.

The win qualifies Thomas for the 34th Junior PGA Championship, July 28-31 at TPC River’s Bend in Maineville, Ohio.

Thomas, who led Lewis and Clark High School to the Washington State 4A championship in Pasco on Thursday, had a final-round 72 for a two-day total of 144 and a three-stroke victory over first round leader, Mallory Kent of Tukwila, Wash.

The Junior PGA Championship is open to one boy and one girl champion from each of the 41 PGA Sections, winners of select national junior tournaments and special invitees.

James Feutz of University Place, Wash., won the boys title.

In a story in the Indianapolis Star, coach Lin Dunn said January will be the team’s starting point guard at the start of the season.

January was team’s first-round draft pick after a standout career at Arizona State.
