Three things we’ll be talking about this week

1 Candidate filing week begins today in Washington state; the primary election will be held Aug. 18. Even though candidates have 16 characters on filing forms to identify their party affiliation, Secretary of State Sam Reed cautioned against getting cute. “If candidates expect to get elected, they need to show they are not playing games,” he said.

2 The 2009 National Veterans Wheelchair Games will be held in Spokane next month. Organizers are marshaling more than 3,000 volunteers to help with registration, meals, transportation, timing, scoring, towel and water distribution, and other tasks. Call (509) 434-7510 or go to wheelchairgames.va.gov for information.

3 June 6 is the 65th anniversary of D-Day, the Allied invasion of France that was a turning point in World War II. By the end of the day, more than 100,000 soldiers had made it ashore, gaining a valuable foothold in Normandy. More than 9,000 were killed or wounded. What’s the D stand for? It’s a military designation for the day an operation or attack begins – D-Day and H-Hour.
