RiverHawks open at Avista tonight

BASEBALL: The 2009 West Coast League season opens tonight at Avista Stadium with the Spokane RiverHawks taking on the Kelowna Falcons.

The home opener will be the first of a three-game series against the Falcons. All three games will begin at 6:30 p.m. at Avista Stadium.

The eight-team, wood-bat league is in its fifth season and will include 48 RiverHawks games. The top two teams in each division make the playoffs.

Kelowna, an East Division rival, nudged out the RiverHawks for the second-place finish in the division last year.

The RiverHawks’ roster this season includes Jason Brunansky, son of former major league baseball player Tom Brunansky. The younger Brunansky plays at Kansas University.

Area players on the roster include Zach Clanton (Coeur d’Alene, Lewis-Clark State College), Danny Jordan (University High, Lower Columbia College), Billy Moon (University, Gonzaga), Tyler Olson (University, Gonzaga) and Jake Partridge (Rogers, Gonzaga).

The RiverHawks have two new faces in coaching roles this year. Joining head coach Barry Matthews will be former Gonzaga players Bryan Winston and Brian Munhall, who played seven years in the minor leagues for the Giants, Rangers and Brewers.
