Forum features principal candidates

The community is invited to a “Meet the Principal Candidates” forum Wednesday from 5 to 7 p.m. at Evergreen Middle School, 14221 E. 16th Ave.

The forum will feature three candidates for the position vacated by retiring Principal Dave Feldhusen. Each candidate will speak about their qualifications and accept questions. Those attending the forum will be asked to submit written feedback for consideration during the hiring process.

The candidates are: John Parker, assistant principal at Evergreen Middle School; Kimberly Stretch, assistant principal at Garry Middle School in Spokane; and Grant “Butch” Walter, assistant principal at Central Valley High School.

City grant requests are due July 30

Spokane Valley is taking applications for city grants next year to economic development and social service agencies.

Organizations must apply by 4 p.m. July 30 and be prepared to give a five-minute presentation to the City Council on Aug. 25. Applicants will be notified by Nov. 13 whether their requests will be added to the city’s 2010 budget.

Next year’s grant total is expected to be similar to this year’s $156,000. Grants this year included $115,000 for economic development and $41,000 for social services.

This year’s grants were: Spokane Valley Arts Council, $5,000; Big Brothers/Big Sisters, $4,000; Greater Spokane Substance Abuse Council, $500; Meals on Wheels, $5,500; Project Access, $15,000; Spokane Valley Partners, $11,000; Greater Spokane Inc., $64,000; International Trade Alliance, $26,000; Spokane Neighborhood Economic Development Alliance, $3,000; Site Selector, $16,500; and Greater Spokane Valley Chamber of Commerce, $5,500.

Fourth bash features free park concert

A free concert for the Fourth of July, featuring The Clintons and Big Red Barn, will begin at 5 p.m. next Saturday in Pavillion Park.

The city’s new skate park inside Pavillion Park will also have its ribbon-cutting at 5 p.m. Fireworks will be set off over the lake after dark. The park is at Country Vista Drive and Molter Road.
