Religion notebook: Cathedral will host choir from England

The Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist, 127 E. 12th Ave., will host the Worcester Cathedral’s Choir of Men and Boys Tuesday at 8 p.m.

The concert will be followed by a reception with entertainment by the Lay Clerks of the Choir.

The choir travels to Spokane from England, where its church has had a tradition of a choir for more than 1,000 years. The 37-member group arrives on Tuesday after a performance on the west side of the state.

They will perform music written by Haydn, J.S. Bach and Charles Villiers Stanford.

Admission is $20 or $10 for anyone 15 or younger.

Lenten activities

St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, 2404 N. Howard St., will offer Bible study on Mondays at 6:30 p.m. during Lent.

They are also offering a soup supper and a program, “Seeking God, Serving God’s People,” Thursdays at 6:30 p.m. and “The Way of the Cross,” a presentation of the Stations of the Cross, Fridays at 6 p.m.

Manito United Methodist Church, 3220 S. Grand Blvd., continues its Lenten Movies 2009 series, “Movies that Made Us Think,” Saturday at 3 p.m. with the movie “The Shoes of the Fisherman,” starring Anthony Quinn and Sir Laurence Olivier.

The afternoon includes discussion.

Speaker

Peter C. Phan from Georgetown University will speak today at 7:30 p.m. in the Globe Room of Cataldo Hall on the Gonzaga University campus, 502 E. Boone Ave., for the 33rd annual Flannery Lecture.

Presented by the religious studies department, Phan will speak on the topic “Forming Catholic Identity in an Age of Religious Pluralism.”

New church

New Beginnings Christian Church has opened at the Corbin Senior Activity Center, 827 W. Cleveland Ave., every Sunday at 9:30 a.m. in the Henderson Room.

The services will feature music from Ransom and Mary and are led by Pastor Larry Stalley.

Employment workshops

Life Center Church, 1223 N. Government Way, will present a series of employment workshops for those looking for jobs.

The first workshop will discuss writing an effective resume and cover letter and will be held Wednesday from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

The second workshop, held April 15 from 7 to 8:30 p.m., will discuss preparing for an interview.

The third workshop will discuss dressing appropriately for an interview from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on April 29.

Book sale

First Presbyterian Church, 318 S. Cedar St., will present its Colossal Book Sale Saturday from 1 to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Books for sale include bestsellers, children’s books, paperbacks, cookbooks, religious books, videos and more. Most selections cost under $5.

The proceeds from the sale benefit the libraries of the church. Any books not sold will be donated to local and foreign missions.
