Volunteers benefit from community service

The North Side Voice featured an article about service organizations and how they serve our community.

There are a large number of individuals in our community who are out of work, depressed, lonely and bored. Sitting at home dwelling on these issues will only compound their frustrations. These individuals range in ages and have many talents. The best way to feel better is to use your time and talents to help others.

Several years ago I went through a period of depression. I finally realized that what I needed was to get involved. It pulled me out of my funk. Helping others improves your skills, helps you to see that there are others out there that are far worse off than yourself, and gives you a sense of accomplishment when projects are completed. You also meet new friends and potential employers.

For too long our society has been about “What’s in it for me?” Make this year your year to change to “What can I do to make my community a better place?” You’ll be benefiting others and you may just find that you’ve become a better person at the same time. Be the change.
