Bulldogs defended

The Spokesman-Review

No, the Zags aren’t home watching the Sweet 16, J.P. O’Shaughnessy (Letters, March 22). They are in it, playing No. 1 seed North Carolina. Of course, they are overrated and a midmajor team, according to your thinking.

Since you’re from Spokane, I presume you are either a Cougars or a Huskies fan. Maybe you are simply disgruntled because your Cougars team was beaten soundly in the NIT tournament by Saint Mary’s, a team from the WCC, one of the weakest conferences in the country. Or on the other hand, maybe you’re upset because your Huskies team didn’t make it to the Sweet 16.

Personally, I’ve always wondered why the Huskies avoid playing the Zags, since we’re a midmajor team and certainly wouldn’t be difficult to beat.

Are you aware that all five teams that defeated Gonzaga are in the NCAA tournament, and three of them – UConn, Memphis and Arizona – are in the Sweet 16? In addition, three teams GU beat on the road also were selected to play in the same tournament, namely Oklahoma State, Maryland and Tennessee.

I would suggest you follow the Zags for more than a few years before making such an uneducated statement. Going to the NCAA tournament 11 years in a row is a major accomplishment in my estimation.
