Teenagers report downtown robbery

Spokane police are investigating a robbery that occurred about 10:20 p.m. Saturday underneath the railroad trestle at First Avenue and Stevens Street.

Two teenage males were held up at knifepoint during the incident, according to a news release. The teens were walking through the area when they were approached by four white men in their mid-20s.

One of the men pulled a folding knife from his pocket and demanded money from the teenagers, who turned over a cell phone, keys, a wallet and a small amount of money, police said.

The victims then fled the scene.

The suspect with the knife was described as about 5-foot-11 and 155 pounds. He was wearing a white T-shirt, blue jeans and a necklace with a cross.

A second suspect, only described as “smaller,” allegedly hit one of the teens in the back of the head as they ran away.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call 911.

Fire causes damage to mobile home

An early morning house fire has displaced a north Spokane family.

Spokane Fire Department crews responded about 12:50 a.m. Sunday to a mobile home at 4911 N. Florida St., where first responders reported seeing heavy smoke. Firefighters confined the blaze mostly to a bedroom at the back of the house, according to a news release.

The rest of the home, however, sustained some smoke and heat damage, fire officials said.

The cause of the fire was under investigation.

Rollover on I-90 injures CdA woman

A Coeur d’Alene woman was injured early Sunday morning in a one-car rollover accident on Interstate 90 at Post Falls.

Deborah K. Butler, 56, was eastbound on the interstate about 4 a.m. near the Pleasantview Road exit when she lost control of her 1989 Toyota pickup, according to the Idaho State Police.

Her truck entered the median and rolled, coming to a rest on its wheels in the westbound lane. Police said Butler was not wearing a seat belt, but she was not ejected from the vehicle. She was transported to Kootenai Medical Center, but her condition was not available. The accident blocked the westbound lanes for about two hours.

Police said alcohol is believed to be a factor in the crash, and that the investigation continues.

Group seeks share of milfoil money

A clean-water group says Bonner County officials should send some of the state money it is receiving to battle Eurasian milfoil to a weevil program planned to start this summer.

Officials with the Pend Oreille Water Keeper say some of the $652,000 the county is receiving from the state Department of Agriculture should be sent to the weevil program the group says is environmentally sustainable.

But county officials say it’s unlikely the agriculture department will approve spending the money on weevils rather than herbicide.

Milfoil usually grows in water less than 20 feet deep and can eventually reach the surface, forming a dense layer that can entangle swimmers and hinder boats. Idaho and other states have spent millions trying to eradicate it.
