Blackhawks secure title in GNL baseball

Cheney secured first place in Great Northern League baseball with a second-game victory during a split of its home doubleheader Friday with Pullman.

The Blackhawks (16-3 overall, 12-2 in league), got a four-hit, eight-strikeout effort by Cameron Lowe who won his eighth straight game in the 6-1 triumph.

Logan Hennessey dropped down a squeeze bunt that scored two during Cheney’s three-run sixth inning. Jack Letsch hit a two-run double in the first inning for a lead that Lowe held.

Pullman had rolled to an 11-2 win in the opener as Jaime Fertakis hit a two-run homer. He also homered in the second game. The Greyhounds (11-4, 10-4) finished tied for second when West Valley (8-11, 8-6) swept a doubleheader against visiting Clarkston (15-4, 10-4) 8-3 and 3-0. Pullman and the Bantams play a district-seeding tiebreaker today, 10 a.m. in Colton. Andrew Clark and Anthony Salazar pitched complete-game victories, Salazar striking out 11. … Also, co-fourth-place Colville (12-6, 8-6) swept host Deer Park 14-4 and 15-3. P.J. Sager and Blake Sjordal had five hits each for the day. …Visiting Medical Lake (5-15, 3-11) swept Riverside (2-15, 0-14) 2-1 and 4-2. T.J. Gover hit a three-run homer, his fourth of the year, in the sixth inning of Game 2 after pitching the opener. … Regionals begin Tuesday.

Greater Spokane League: Mead (16-4) broke even at University (18-2), beating the Titans 9-7 on the strength of a five-run second inning. Nick Bond belted a three-run homer in the decisive frame and finished 3 for 4 with four runs batted in. Kyle Courtney was 4 for 4 and three RBIs. District 8 4A play begins Monday, 4 p.m. at Avista Stadium, with Lewis and Clark (12-8) playing Ferris (13-7) in a loser-out contest. The winner plays U-Hi Wednesday, following Mead vs. Central Valley.

Idaho 4A Region I: Host Moscow broke open the game in the sixth to defeat Sandpoint 8-2 for the championship and trip to state next week in Moscow. Winning pitcher Zach Hall went the distance, striking out eight and hit a two-run home run. Leadoff hitter Myke Washington was 3 for 4 doubling twice.

Idaho 3A District I-II: Bonners Ferry scored two unearned runs in the third for a 2-1 win over St. Maries at Orofino. Greg Taggart pitched a three-hitter, striking out eight and walking none. The Badgers play tournament host Orofino, a 5-4 winner over Kellogg, today at 3 p.m. St. Maries plays Kellogg at 1.

District 7 1A: Lakeside entertains Freeman for the championship today at 2 p.m. after both were victorious on Friday. The Eagles bested Newport 9-2, buoyed by Nick Kelly’s second inning grand slam homer. Dillon Watkins took a no-hitter into the seventh and fanned nine. … Freeman’s Scotties topped Chewelah 7-5, Beau Barnes driving in two runs including with a double and earning the save. Chewelah and Newport play at 11 a.m. at Lakeside in a loser-out game today.

Softball

Idaho 4A Region I: Lakeland outlasted host Sandpoint 14-12 in a rain-shortened game and will play at Moscow today in the finals needing two wins to advance to state. The Hawks scored 11 runs in the third and made it stand up. Alia Cox drove in three runs with three hits including a double.

Idaho District 3A I-II: Timberlake and St. Maries won at the tournament, the host Tigers beating Priest River 15-2 and St. Maries winning 7-2 over Kellogg. The two play today at noon for the championship. Halee Edelblute was 4 for 4 and drove in three runs for Timberlake. Karly Truscott was 3 for 4, scored twice and tripled in a run in the first inning for St. Maries. Michelle Guidry scored four runs. Kellogg eliminated Bonners Ferry 14-3 and Priest River ousted Orofino 6-5 with those winners meeting at 10 a.m. in a loser-out game.

GSL: With Monday games remaining, three teams are tied for two remaining playoff spots. Lewis and Clark, Gonzaga Prep and Ferris are all 5-14. In Friday’s games, University (17-2) won 14-1 over the visiting Tigers in five innings. Dakota Schiermeister and Jordan Schmerer each drove in three runs. … Central Valley (17-2) won at Ferris 11-6, Becky White was 4 for 4 with a triple, driving in two and scoring three times. … Mt. Spokane (11-8) edged Gonzaga Prep 4-2 at home. Delaney Zalud struck out 14 and the Wildcats took the lead with a three-run third when they got their only three hits of the game. … North Central (8-11) won 5-2 at East Valley (9-11) in a game between 3A foes. Katherine Lively was 3 for 4 with a double and Emily Geldbach hit a two-run triple in the sixth. … Mead’s Taneesha Pounder blanked visiting Rogers (1-18) 6-0 on four hits. Pounder also scored twice and Breanna Lookabill hit a two-run triple for the Panthers (12-7).

G reat Northern League: Colville (16-1, 12-0) remained unbeaten with 10-2 and 6-0 win over Deer Park (8-10, 4-8). Mayakla Carr threw a no-hitter, striking out seven in the second game. Jen Ebel had four hits in the first game. … Riverside (3-13, 3-9) swept Medical Lake (0-16, 0-12). Jolene Millspaugh won both games, 22-5 as a starter and 18-9 in relief, and had five hits, scoring seven runs and driving in four.. … The Clarkston at WV twinbill was postponed to Tuesday.

Track and field

Coeur d’Alene boys and girls won in Region I 5A and the Lakeland girls and Moscow boys won in 4A during their respective state-qualifying meets in Lewiston. The Viking girls beat Post Falls 82-80.5 and the boys won a close three-way meet with 78 points over Lake City and Lewiston. Vikinga distance runner Kinsey Gomez and Post Falls thrower Rebecca Bauman, Coeur d’Alene distance runner Cody Curtis and Lake City hurdler Tanner Schalk were all double winners.
