Council reworking contracts
The Spokane Valley City Council plans to act Tuesday on a new contract with the Splash Down Family Water Park in the city’s Valley Mission Park.
The deal will replace a contract the city inherited from Spokane County and temporarily extended last year.
Parks Director Mike Stone said a difficult-to-administer fee system would be replaced with fixed annual payments. He said the payments would start at $40,000 and rise every other year, for six years, to a maximum of $46,000.
The contract is to run 10 years, with options for two five-year extensions.
Splash Down owners Geoff and Melissa Kellogg would remain responsible for all operating expenses, but the city would take over maintenance of a shared parking lot.
Also on Tuesday, the council plans to act on a new 10-year contract with the Western Dance Association for use of a city-owned building in Sullivan Park. That contract also provides for two five-year renewals.
Stone said the contract calls for $500-a-month payments and no major changes from the current agreement. The association is responsible for maintenance of the building, which remains available for city use.

EV school board losing Sine
Longtime East Valley School District board member June Sine announced at Tuesday’s board meeting that she would not be running for re-election in November. “It was a hard decision, but was one I made some time ago for personal reasons,” she said. “I’ve loved what I was doing.”
She was first elected to the board in 1991 when she had two children in middle school and two older children who had already graduated from the district. She stayed on the school board long after her youngest children graduated. “I thought about it for a long time,” she said of her decision. “It’s time to move on.”
