Better city leaders are the answer

Just got through reading the front page article (Valley Voice, May 9) by John Craig about Mayor Rich Munson’s possible violation of our constitutional rights, and I flashed back to my feelings of relief when I read the article about his behavior last week. My feelings were those of relief that at the last minute I changed my mind about attending the Sprague-Appleway Revitalization Plan meeting.

A few weeks ago a lady came by my home asking me to sign a petition about un-incorporating Spokane Valley. As a general rule I sign petitions because it gives us a chance to discuss the subject. Un-incorporating is an unknown procedure for me. What would it take – what are the “ins and outs” – how do you go about it? It can’t be just a simple vote and shazam – it’s all gone.

For years I voted not to incorporate. When I changed my vote to incorporate it was because of the actions of one county commissioner. Her telling those of us who were not in favor of the Appleway/Sprague one-way streets, to forget fighting it, it was a “done deal.” (I’ve never been too happy about only three people having so much power over the entire county). I’ve stopped shopping in the one-way section of Sprague; it’s just not an efficient way to run errands!

Which leads me to another question: Why is the Spokane Valley so intent on turning the University district into the city center? There isn’t even an exit off the freeway to University. A successful developer of commercial real estate would not develop that area for a business center. It’s not even the geographical city center. Question: Who is going to profit if that happens?

Back to my point of writing this letter: Perhaps concerned citizens should start a recall of Mayor Munson. Perhaps we don’t need to un-incorporate, perhaps we just need to elect better people to run the city.
