Storm serves up wintry appetizer

Motorists struggled with a slippery Friday evening commute as the first snow of the season fell across much of the Inland Northwest.

Authorities reported numerous collisions but no serious injuries on the slick roads. The National Weather Service had issued a hazardous outlook report through the evening.

Snow accumulated at higher elevations in Spokane and the surrounding region Friday, with about a half-inch covering the ground on the South Hill. Downtown Spokane saw little, if any, accumulation.

Among those enjoying the snowfall Friday afternoon were Raney Close, of Spokane, and her three children, who were walking through a white Manito Park. Close said her daughter told her she was glad it’s winter “so she can start drinking hot cocoa, I guess.”

Ski areas could see up to a foot of new snow this morning, forecasters said. That will help early-season skiing.

Highs should reach the mid-30s under partly sunny skies today. Cloudy weather is expected Sunday with similar temperatures. Lows should be in the low to mid-20s. Milder weather is expected next week, with highs Monday and Tuesday in the mid- to upper-40s and a mix of sun and clouds.
