Cougars lose to K-State

For the second time in as many games, Washington State freshman KiKi Moore scored a team-high 17 points with seven steals and six assists, but against Kansas State (1-2) it was not enough as the Cougars (1-1) fell 70-63 in Manhattan, Kan.

•Jasmine Stohr scored 19 points and Lewis-Clark State (5-1) upended Whitworth (0-1) in the Pirates’ season opener 67-55 at the Kim Evanger Raney Memorial Classic at Sherwood Center in Walla Walla.

Men’s basketball

Jack Loofburrow scored 18 and Nate Montgomery added 17 for Whitworth (0-1), but Wisconsin-Stevens Point (2-0) shot 67.8 percent from the floor and hit 9 of 18 from 3-point range in its 101-79 win at the Puget Sound Tip-Off Classic in Tacoma.

Volleyball

Community Colleges of Spokane (31-12) set itself up for a real shot at the NWAACC title with a five-game win against Bellevue CC and then a 25-23, 25-18, 25-16 sweep of Wenatchee Valley CC in the NWAACC Championships in Gresham, Ore. Against WVCC, Nicole Graybeal notched 10 kills and five blocks for the Sasquatch, who play Mt. Hood CC (32-9) today in the semis.

Wrestling

Jesse Nielsen picked up three match victories and North Idaho College went 2-1 in its three duals at the Cardinal Duals in Coeur d’Alene. Nielsen tallied a pin and a major decision in NIC wins against Yakima Valley CC and Clackamas CC and picked up the team’s only win in a loss to Great Falls (Mont.).

Girls basketball

Dayna Drager led three Coeur d’Alene players in double figures with 16 points in a 55-45 win against Post Falls in Inland Empire League action in Post Falls.

•Nathanbe Spencer scored a game-high 26 points and Lakeland committed 33 turnovers, including 23 in the first half, as Lapawai beat the Hawks 56-40 to open the Bengal Shootout in Lewiston. … In the second game, Lewiston built a 24-point lead by halftime en-route to a 59-24 win over Moscow.

Hockey

Jake Peterson scored at the 3:03 mark in the second overtime to lift the Spokane Braves (16-9-0-2) to a 3-2 KIJHL win over visiting Penticton (6-17-0-1) at Eagle Ice-A-Rena.

Football

One of the Spokane Shock’s defensive leaders over the past two seasons will return in 2010 as the Shock announced the signing of linebacker Kevin McCullough. The past two seasons, McCullough has totaled 132.5 tackles, 15 interceptions and four fumble recoveries.

Also announced were the signings of defensive linemen Josh Leonard and Jeremy Geathers.

Baseball

Three Spokane-area players are among 11 who signed letters of intent to play at Washington State University.

Mt. Spokane outfielder Nate Blackham, West Valley pitcher/outfielder Mitch Peterson and Central Valley pitcher/infielder Scott Simon are among the signees.

Also signing with the Cougars are pitcher/third baseman Sal Arena, Puyallup, Wash.; pitcher/outfielder Nick LaRoy, Kalama, Wash.; pitcher/infielder J.D.
