In brief: NIC presents Warren Miller film

COEUR D’ALENE – North Idaho College’s Outdoor Pursuits will present the Warren Miller winter sports film “Dynasty: Celebrating 60 Years of Filmmaking.” at 6:30 tonight in the Boswell Hall Schuler Performing Arts Center.

Lookout Pass is co-sponsoring the event and will distribute two-for-one lift ticket vouchers to all ticketholders.

General admission is $15; $10 for NIC students, youths and senior citizens.

Prior to the film, students in the Resort/Recreation Management program and the NIC Snowriders Club will host the Turkey Bowl Rail Jam starting at 2 p.m. in the east Molstead Library parking lot near Hubbard Street.

Riders can sign up at 1 p.m. to participate in the rail jam. The cost to participate is $20, or $15 with a donation to Toys for Tots. The event is free to spectators.

Church to host Snowflake Faire

COEUR D’ALENE – St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 501 E. Wallace Ave., will hold its annual Snowflake Faire from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Dec. 5.

Church members and local vendors will offer jewelry, crafts, stocking stuffers and more. Drawings will be held for art items and custom baskets. Maggie’s Café will serve lunch beginning at 11.

The event is the primary fundraiser of the St. Luke’s Guild, a women’s group that offers support to five local food banks, the Coeur d’Alene Homes, and, through the church’s Jubilee Outreach Ministry, the St. Vincent de Paul Transitional Housing Center.

Schedule changes for photo classes

POST FALLS – Digital photography courses planned at the Post Falls Library, 821 N. Spokane St., have been rescheduled.

Elements of Photography will run from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Dec. 3.

The Art of Photography will run from 9 to 11 a.m. Dec. 5.

Review and Critique will be take place from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Dec. 10.

Festival of Trees set for Saturday

COEUR D’ALENE – Preparations continue for Saturday’s Festival of Trees gala at the Coeur d’Alene Resort.

A wedding-themed tree will be the newest at the event. The couple who purchase the wedding tree also will receive wedding accoutrements including a professional coordinator, invitations, a rehearsal dinner, a dress, flowers and a cake.

Proceeds will support expanded cancer care services at Kootenai Cancer Centers in Coeur d’Alene, Post Falls and Sandpoint.

Gift benefits GED programs

COEUR D’ALENE – Hastings, 101 E. Best Ave., recently donated more than $485 to the North Idaho College Adult Basic Education Center. Hastings donated the money from the change trays near its cash registers.

The funds will go toward scholarships to offset the cost of General Education Development testing for those needing financial assistance and toward reading curriculum material for the program.

Family to live in Habitat home

SPIRIT LAKE – Habitat for Humanity of North Idaho planned to break ground Saturday on its 32nd home, at 32170 N. Maine St. in Spirit Lake.

The three-bedroom, one-bath home was built for Carolyn Williams, a single mother of three who holds two jobs. Her new home is the first of four homes to be built by Habitat in Spirit Lake.

Partnering with Habitat are Riverbend Technical Academy and area high schools through the Learn to Earn program. The program allows students to earn high school and college credits while getting experience on a construction site.

Habitat operates a thrift store at 176 W. Wyoming Ave. in Hayden that sells new and used building materials. Proceeds go toward building homes. Donations of materials can be taken to the store or donors can call (208) 762-4352 to arrange a pickup by volunteers.

NIC students, paper honored

COEUR D’ALENE – The Sentinel, North Idaho College’s student-produced newspaper, won first place in Best of Show for two-year colleges at the national Associated Collegiate Press/College Media Association Convention in Austin, Texas.

Loren Kelly, of Coeur d’Alene, the Sentinel’s arts and entertainment editor, won second place nationally for reporter of the year for two-year colleges. Former editor Jake Donahue received second place nationally for Page One design.

With about 35 students on staff, the Sentinel is a credited class at NIC and produces five to six issues a semester.
