Out Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Sam Bradford will not start for No. 8 Oklahoma on Saturday at No. 17 Miami. Sooners coach Bob Stoops said that Landry Jones will start for Bradford, who hasn’t played since spraining the AC joint in his right, throwing shoulder the first week of the season. Stoops did not say whether Bradford could serve as Jones’ backup.
Denies Cincinnati Reds pitcher Bronson Arroyo has denied accusations by the St. Louis Cardinals that he used pine tar to get better grips on pitches. St. Louis manager Tony La Russa and pitching coach Dave Duncan both told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch the stain on the bill on Arroyo’s cap was pine tar that helped him grip balls during a 6-1 win Wednesday.
Returning The San Francisco Giants are close to finalizing new deals for general manager Brian Sabean and manager Bruce Bochy, according to a person with knowledge of the situation. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because details had not been finalized.
Collapsed Tennessee basketball forward Emmanuel Negedu will spend some time at the Cleveland Clinic to consult with doctors about his health. The 20-year-old was revived by the Volunteers’ training staff after a post-workout collapse at the Tennessee training facilities on Monday. Tennessee staff have not confirmed reports that he did not have a pulse after collapsing.
Canceled Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback David Garrard thought hosting a weekly radio show would be a good idea. Maybe he should have discussed it with coach Jack Del Rio first. When Del Rio learned about Garrard’s Friday show, which aired the last three weeks, it was canceled faster than a network TV dud. “Less than 48 hours away from the game, it’s not even a question,” Del Rio said.
