Roundup: No. 1 NIC triumphs

Sophomore Marketa Hanzlova had 16 kills and freshman Kaylee Ponce added 13 kills and nine digs to lift No. 1-ranked North Idaho College past College of Eastern Utah 25-15, 25-18, 26-28, 25-20 in Scenic West Athletic Conference volleyball Thursday at Christianson Gym.

Aubree Chestnut (Post Falls High) added six blocks.

Women’s tennis

Idaho’s Maria Perevoshchikova was named the Western Athletic Conference’s player of the month for September. Perevoshchikova posted a 6-2 singles record in September, advancing to the semifinals of the Cougar Classic and to the finals of the Gonzaga/Eastern Washington Fall Invitational.

Perevoshchikova and doubles partner Alexandra Ulesanu were 7-1 in September.

Women’s golf

Sophomore Kayla Mortellaro earned the WAC’s player of the month award after leading Idaho to two team titles in September. Mortellaro was third at the Ptarmigan Ram Fall Classic with rounds of 72-68-70 for a score of 210. She had rounds of 74-71-74 to earn medalist honors at the Washington State Inland Cup.

Baseball

Walla Walla has been awarded an expansion franchise in the West Coast League, a summer collegiate wood-bat league, and will begin playing next season. The organization expects to introduce a general manager, team name, logo and colors soon.
