A recent Spokane Valley transplant is trying his hand as businessman by opening a new martial arts studio in Otis Orchards.

John Burt, a black belt second-degree, opened a small studio last month to continue his interests in the sport and training for all ages. He opened Matsunaga Karate Do to teach Shorin-Ryu karate, one of the major modern styles of Okinawan martial arts.

His studio space is a 500-square-foot section of a building along Wellesley Avenue where he offers instruction in the martial art that is characterized by natural breathing and stances.

“I’m here to teach, … and if I get more students I can get a bigger place,” said Burt, who has been training since 1986.

The retired government employee moved to the area a year ago from Arizona with his wife, Terry, to be closer to family. Burt also has lived in Alaska and Western Washington where he was involved in karate instruction. Currently, he is taking college courses part-time.

With a handful of students, he is offering classes Mondays, Fridays and Saturdays in a walk-in environment. He charges $40 per month per person and $20 per month for a second family member.

Burt says he prefers to keep the business simple and more like a club. He requires no initiation fee or contract. He said he would be happy if he makes rent each month, as he wants to continue his enjoyment of the sport as well as be able to teach others. He’s hopeful that his students will soon be able to participate in local competition.

He also noted he would like to offer a series of classes catered toward self-defense instruction if he gets enough interest and participation.

Associated Agents Group open

In other local business activity, a new independent insurance agency has opened in Spokane Valley with four licensed staff members.

Owner Guy Williams recently opened Associated Agents Group, Inc. at 7816 E. Broadway Ave. Williams had worked as an Allstate agent in the area for several years. His new company offers auto, home, life, health, disability and business insurance.
