WSU stuns No. 18 Arizona

The Washington State volleyball team, fresh off its first loss of the season against Oregon, responded by upsetting No. 18 Arizona 25-21, 25-22, 26-24 in Pullman on Friday.

The Cougars (13-1, 2-1) were led by sophomore Meagan Ganzer with 12 kills while Jackie Albright added nine kills and 10 digs against the Wildcats (12-2, 1-2).

Tiffany Owens led UA with 18 kills, but hit at only .273 percent against a stout WSU defense led by Lewis and Clark grad Oceana Bush.

•The University of Washington (13-0, 3-0) took everything Arizona State (11-4, 1-2) could throw at it in the final game of their Pac-10 match as the Huskies prevailed to win 25-23, 25-16, 25-22 in Seattle.

Kindra Carlson had 13 kills and four blocks while Bianca Rowland added 10 kills and four aces for the Huskies, who have yet to play beyond three games in any match this season.

•Eastern Washington (10-5, 5-0) looked bad defensively early on against Sacramento State (9-8, 1-2), but turned things around to stay unbeaten in Big Sky competition, winning 15-25, 25-16, 25-17, 25-23. Sara Todorovich led EWU in the last three games with 10 kills and five blocks.

•Community Colleges of Spokane (19-8, 5-0) was paced by Nicole Graybeal’s 16 kills and four blocks in a 25-17, 19-25, 25-14, 26-24 victory over Treasure Valley Community College (8-6, 2-3) at Spokane Falls CC.

•Whitworth struggled to find any holes against No. 18 Pacific Lutheran (9-5, 5-0), netting 23 hitting errors to 22 kills in its 25-13, 25-9, 25-23 loss at home. PLU dominated the net against the Pirates (4-12, 0-5) with 40 kills and 14 blocks, led by Erin Bremond, who had a team-high nine kills and six blocks.

Women’s soccer

Idaho and Louisiana Tech needed all but 16 seconds in regulation and two OTs to finally break a scoreless deadlock in their Western Athletic Confence opener in Ruston, La.

With time winding down, Vandals’ defender Desirae Hull sent a long pass up to teammate Jennifer Hull, who punched the ball into the net for the winning goal, giving the Vandals (8-4, 1-0) the 1-0 victory.

•North Idaho College battled No. 9 Laramie County Community College in Cheyenne, Wyo., but a key miss by NIC (3-4-4) at center circle in the 19th minute led to a quick goal by Michaela Boyd for LCCC (10-1-1) and the Golden Eagles never relinquished the lead in a 2-1 win. Lauren Linford scored NIC’s goal in the 89th minute.

•The University of Washington (7-2-1) scored two first-half goals against Gonzaga (6-5) and went on to win their non-conference game 3-1 in Seattle. The Bulldogs regrouped after intermission but had two good looks go wide against UW keeper Kari Davidson before Sheridan Jones broke through to score GU’s goal in the 64th minute.

McKenna Waitley scored her second goal for the Huskies with five minutes to play, though, to put the game out of reach.

Men’s soccer

Gonzaga ran its winless streak against Saint Mary’s to four in a 2-0 loss to the Gaels (5-1-2, 1-0) in their West Coast Conference opener in Moraga, Calif.

Dylan Leslie scored both goals for the Gaels in the opening half and the Bulldogs (3-3-2, 0-1) could not find the net against Saint Mary’s keeper Doug Herrick, getting shut out in back-to-back games after a 3-0 loss to New Mexico on Sept. 20.

•Washington (3-4-2, 0-0-1) and San Diego State (3-2-3, 0-0-1) played to a 0-0 tie in Pac-10 play in Seattle.

•North Idaho College (3-6-1) suffered a 2-1 loss to Western Wyoming (7-5-3) in Rock Springs, Wyo.

Hockey

Spokane (5-3-0-1) withstood a three-goal third period by Creston Valley (3-3-0-0) and held on for a 5-4 KIJHL victory in Creston, British Columbia. The Braves scored three times in the first to build an early lead and Nick Redding’s goal with 15:55 left was the winner for the Braves.
