My husband and I celebrated our 25th anniversary in the Gem Peak Fire Tower near Noxon, Mont. We picked up a map at the Cabinet Ranger Station and headed up 19 miles of a steep gravel road to the remote mountain top.

We closed the gate that said “Tower Occupied” and hauled our gear up 44 stairs. A picnic dinner, champagne and a vibrant sunset lead to a romantic starry night.

In this region, many towers are available for $30 per night. Book on line at: www.recreation.gov.
