In brief: Ballet holding auditions for boys

SPOKANE VALLEY – Spokane Youth Ballet, located at the Academy of Dance, 14214 E. Sprague Ave., will hold auditions Oct. 23 at 6:15 p.m. for boys ages 10 to 15. No previous experience is necessary.

The audition will qualify interested boys for a scholarship that will supply all training and performance fees for the 2009-’10 season.

Boys should come dressed in ballet class attire or exercise clothes that allow for full movement and should arrive at least 15 minutes before the audition.

Fall Leaf Festival is Saturday

WEST HILLS – The annual Fall Leaf Festival will be Saturday at John A. Finch Arboretum, 1299 S. F St., from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The event will teach about composting, urban forestry and gardening, plus offer the fun of jumping into big piles of leaves.

The event, presented by the Spokane Parks and Recreation Department, is free.

Bar hosting food drive

RIVERSIDE – Gibliano Brothers Dueling Piano Bar and Music House, 718 W. Riverside Ave., will have a food drive Oct. 29-31 to benefit Second Harvest Food Bank. Bins will be available for nonperishable food donations from 4 p.m. to 2 a.m.

People who bring two food items will get free cover into the bar. Gibliano Brothers’ dueling pianists will also be contributing by accepting food donations as tips.

Gibliano Brothers has pledged a $500 cash donation and is looking to local businesses and to the community to provide a matching donation. For more information, call Nick Brumback at (509) 869-4640.

Area schools place at band event

KENNEWICK – Local high school marching band students recently strutted their stuff and shared their talent at the southeast Washington’s Cavalcade of Bands.

Preliminary competition standings include:

Division AA: 1, Cheney 68.805; 2, West Valley (Spokane) 68.25.

Preliminary Caption Awards: Brass and Wind – Cheney; Percussion – Cheney; General Effect – West Valley.

Division AAA-Small: University 63.1.

Division AAA-Open: 1, Mead 79.93; 2, Central Valley 76.735; 4, Mt. Spokane 73.095.

Preliminary Caption Awards: Brass and Wind – Central Valley; Percussion – Mead; Auxiliary – Mead; Visual – Mead; General Effect – Mead.

Finals could not be completed due to weather. All official finals standings were determined with scores from preliminary competition.

Stage reading by Sage Players

Manito – Manito United Methodist Church, 3220 S. Grand Blvd., will host the Sage Players in a performance of “The School for Scandal,” Friday, Saturday and Oct. 23 and 24 at 7 p.m. and Oct. 25 at 2 p.m.

The Sage Players grew out of the Institute for Extended Learning Senior Program readers’ theater class and performed “Our Town” last November and February.

The cost to attend is a minimum $10 and the proceeds will be split between the church and the Institute’s Senior Program Scholarship Fund.
