College roundup: UI women win again
Kayla Mortellaro finished in second place and led the Idaho Vandals to their third team title in four tries this fall, a seven-stroke victory Wednesday at the Price’s Give ’Em Five Invitational at the New Mexico State University Golf Course in Las Cruces, N.M.
Mortellaro, who finished with a 67, carded at 6-under-par 210 to help the Vandals to a 7-over 871. UC Irvine placed second and San Diego State, guided by medalist Christine Wong (206) took third.
Idaho’s Amanda Jacobs and Teo Poplawski shot 220, one shot better than Frida Nilsson’s 221.
Volleyball
Nicole Graybeal finished with 13 kills and four blocks as the Community Colleges of Spokane Sasquatch (20-8, 7-0) continued to set the pace in the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges East Division with a 3-0 sweep of Big Bend (2-18, 1-8) at Moses Lake.
The Sasquatch have won six consecutive matches.
Women’s soccer
Corina Gabbert’s two first-half goals stood up as Whitman (4-7-1, 3-6) surprised the Whitworth Pirates 2-0 in Northwest Conference play at the Whitworth Soccer Field.
The Pirates (10-3, 7-2), who defeated Whitman 2-1 in Walla Walla last month, saw their four-match winning streak snapped. Whitworth fell two games behind first-place Puget Sound.
•Margo Hickman scored late in the first half as Walla Walla (12-1, 9-0) posted a 1-0 win over CC Spokane (5-4-2, 5-3-1) at Spokane Falls CC.
Men’s soccer
Sam Palmer scored on a penalty kick in the third minute, launching CC Spokane (5-7-1, 5-2 NWAACC) to a 2-1 win over Walla Walla (8-2, 5-2) at SFCC.
Andrew Mastronardi added a goal early in the second half for the Sasquatch, the second team to score more than one goal off the Warriors this season.
•Diego Esquivias scored in the 88th minute as North Idaho (4-8-2) won for the first time since Sept. 7, a 2-1 non-conference decision at Wenatchee Valley (5-5-1).
