College golf: Pirates’ Guthrie is Fall Classic medalist
Emily Guthrie took medalist honors and Whitworth’s men’s and women’s golf teams both finished in second place at the Northwest Conference Fall Classic in Portland.
Guthrie posted a two-day total of 157 to beat Jill Westendorf of George Fox University by three strokes. Guthrie shot an 80 on Saturday and a 77 on Sunday.
Whitworth’s women led after the first round, but George Fox overcame an eight-stroke deficit Sunday to earn first place. Bruins golfers placed second through fifth in the individual standings. George Fox finished at 651, with Whitworth at 663.
Whitworth’s men posted the best team round of the tournament Sunday with an even-par 288, but their two-day total of 594 was second behind Linfield’s 591.
Cameron Whittle was the Pirates’ top finisher, tying for fourth place with a two-day total of 147.
The Fall Classic counts 25 percent toward the final conference standings. The Spring Classic will also count 25 percent, and the end-of-year NWC Tournament will count 50 percent.
•Washington State’s women’s golf team had the lowest round of the tournament at the Hawkeye Invitational in Iowa City, Iowa, but fell behind in the final round for a ninth-place finish.
The Cougars shot 317-304-324 for a total of 84-over 948, 34 shots behind winner Missouri State. Ali Thompson tied for 19th to lead WSU.
