Sports in brief: Arrest likely in Connecticut stabbing

From Staff And Wire Reports

College football: A Bloomfield man will be arrested in the stabbing death of a University of Connecticut football player, his lawyer said Monday night, as police continued to sort out what happened during a fight outside a school-sponsored dance over the weekend in Storrs, Conn.

Attorney Deron Freeman declined to identify his client, but says the man and several others got into a fight “with about six” UConn football players early Sunday. Freeman says his client did not stab Jasper Howard, but was present when Howard was mortally wounded.

Freeman said police searched his client’s home in Bloomfield and removed some items. Freeman said police told him that his client and others will be arrested.

Sharks stall Rangers streak at seven

Hockey: Devin Setoguchi scored two of San Jose’s six consecutive goals and the Sharks took advantage of New York backup goalie Steve Valiquette in a 7-3 comeback victory in New York that snapped the Rangers’ seven-game winning streak.

The Sharks got off to a sluggish start in the first half of the first period, falling behind 2-0. San Jose got even before the period was over and then scored three more goals in the second on only 10 shots at Valiquette.

Panthers DB suspended for hit

NFL: The NFL suspended Carolina Panthers special teams player Dante Wesley one game without pay for launching himself into defenseless Tampa Bay returner Clifton Smith.

Wesley left his feet and hit Smith in the neck and head with his forearm and shoulder as Smith waited to field a punt late in the second quarter on Sunday. Smith sustained a concussion and both benches emptied onto the field. Wesley was immediately ejected.

•Jets lose Jenkins: New York Jets nose tackle Kris Jenkins has been placed on season-ending injured reserve with a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee.

Coach Rex Ryan said the team would re-sign veteran defensive tackle Howard Green to make up for the loss.

•Jaguars’ Mathis breaks finger: Jaguars cornerback Rashean Mathis has a broken index finger on his left hand and might need surgery to repair ligament damage.

•Ravens’ Rolle appears done: Baltimore Ravens defensive back Samari Rolle almost certainly won’t play this season because of a neck injury.

Dead Detroit racers described as healthy

Miscellany: The deaths of three runners who collapsed during a 13.1-mile half marathon appear to have been an aberration, but at least six runners have died while competing in such events in the last two months.

Autopsies were inconclusive on the bodies of Rick Brown, 65, of Marietta, Ohio; Daniel Langdon, 36, of Laingsburg in central Michigan; and Jonathan Fenlon, 26, of Waterford, northwest of Detroit. The Wayne County medical examiner has requested toxicology tests.

The three died Sunday during or after running a half marathon at the Detroit Free Press/Flagstar Bank Marathon. Brown and Langdon collapsed near the end of the race, and Fenlon died after crossing the finish line. Friends and family of the men said they had trained for the 13.1-mile race and were in great shape.

•Jockey dies after fall: The Oklahoma Horse Racing Commission said it is investigating the death of a Texas jockey who was thrown from his horse during a thoroughbred race at Blue Ribbon Downs in Sallisaw over the weekend.

Racetrack general manager Blaine Storey said Mark Pace, 58, died Sunday after falling off his mount, Reep What You Sow, during the first race. According to the race chart, the horse hit the rail on the backstretch, lost its jockey and did not finish.

•Louisville players reach plea deal: Two University of Louisville basketball players were sentenced to one year of probation after pleading guilty to a charge stemming from an altercation with off-duty police at a Jeffersonville, Ind., restaurant earlier this month.

Guard Jerry Smith, 22, and forward Terrence Jennings, 20, must complete 40 hours of community service and pay about $500 in court costs as part of their pleas on a charge of resisting law enforcement, a misdemeanor.
