In brief: Body washes up on beach
GRAYLAND, Wash. – The Grays Harbor County Sheriff’s Office is investigating after a woman’s body washed onto a beach near Grayland on the Washington coast.
Undersheriff Rick Scott said the body of a woman believed to be in her 40s was reported Friday morning. Investigators believe the body had been in the water less than 24 hours, he said, and debris that also washed ashore suggests a boating mishap may have been involved.
An autopsy is planned. Detectives hope the woman’s tattoos and scars will help them identify her.
Dash to vet nets prison term
OLYMPIA – An Olympia man’s failed attempt to save his dog after it was struck by a car will cost him four years in prison.
Robert Ottoboni, 34, got in his car and raced to Mountain View Veterinary Clinic after his Labrador retriever was struck by a car June 23. He later told police he had drunk three tall Olympia beers while playing golf that day. He said he also had smoked marijuana.
Ottoboni crashed his Subaru into an Isuzu Amigo, then ran off on foot carrying his dog in his arms.
A 4-year-old boy in the Isuzu suffered disfiguring facial injuries and will need multiple reconstructive surgeries.
Ottoboni’s dog later was euthanized at the veterinary clinic.
Ottoboni pleaded guilty in September to vehicular assault and hit-and-run, along with aggravating factors that made him eligible for sentencing enhancements.
On Thursday, Thurston County Superior Court Judge Gary Tabor handed down an exceptional sentence for Ottoboni, one beyond the standard range for his crimes.
Ottoboni’s judgment and sentence document states that the injuries to the victim “substantially exceed the level of harm contemplated” in the vehicular-assault statute to which he pleaded guilty.
Beck’s visit has price tag
MOUNT VERNON, Wash. – Glenn Beck’s visit to his hometown in September brought more than media attention and protesters.
It also cost the city nearly $18,000.
The Skagit Valley Herald reports that supplies, equipment costs and overtime for police officers and firefighters added up to $17,748.85.
Finance Director Alicia Hushka said that some officers will take comp time and reusable items bought for the event will lower the cost to about $10,500.
Beck visited his hometown after Mayor Bud Morris decided to give the controversial radio personality a ceremonial key to the city. Beck grew up in Skagit and Whatcom counties.
