Scott wins by 1 shot

MeadowWood Golf Course professional Bob Scott shot a second-round even-par 72 on Wednesday to finish at 2-under 142 en route to a first-place finish at the Inland Empire Chapter PGA’s Farwest E-Z Go tournament at Circling Raven Golf Club in Worley, Idaho.

Scott finished one stroke better than runners-up Luke Baker of Deer Park GC and Adam Syverson of Indian Canyon GC.

Darin Vaughan of Twin Lakes Village GC, first-round leader Timothy Morton of Prairie Falls GC and Colin Floyd of Manito G&CC finished in a three-way tie for fourth place at 146.

Floyd and Syverson tied for low round of the second day with 71.

•Former Eastern Washington golfer Brenda Howe (Hall) has been named the Eagles’ head women’s golf coach.

Howe earned All-Big Sky Conference honors in 1995 and 1996 and made the Big Sky All-Academic team in 1997 and 1998. Howe was an assistant at Washington State University from 1999-2001.

Eastern will co-host the Bulldog/Eagle Challenge with Gonzaga on Monday and Tuesday at Hangman Valley GC.

In her final season, Howe played for coach Marc Hughes, who was recently named associate director of athletics for development and director of golf.

“Marc has done a tremendous job for the program the past 11 years,” Howe said in a press release. “I am honored to take over the reins at my alma mater and I look forward to taking the program to new heights.”

Cross country

Eastern Washington University’s Kyle King was named the Big Sky Conference athlete of the week.

King, a sophomore, finished second at the Clash of the Inland Northwest on Saturday with a time of 20 minutes, 28 seconds over 6,000 meters. He helped the Eagles post a 3-0 record at the four-team dual-scoring meet.

College volleyball

Beth Altena and Nicole Graybeal each had seven kills and Kelsey Kurtz notched 18 assists to lead the Community Colleges of Spokane Sasquatch (7-3, 1-0) to a 25-8, 25-16, 25-15 win over the Big Bend Vikings (0-1, 0-1) in NWAACC play at SFCC.

Women’s soccer

Whitney Brannan scored a pair of goals and the Eastern Washington Eagles (2-3) rolled to a 3-0 victory over the Eastern Oregon Mountaineers (0-2) in Camas, Ore.

Brittany Sparks staked the Eagles to a 1-0 lead with an unassisted goal at the 25:25 mark. Brannan put the match out of reach with goals in the 30th and 51st minutes.

Men’s basketball

Tickets for the Battle in Seattle at KeyArena go on sale Saturday at Ticketmaster locations at local Fred Meyer stores. The Dec. 12 game pits the Gonzaga Bulldogs against the Davidson Wildcats. This is the seventh Battle in Seattle. The Zags won the first three games in the series but have lost the last three, including an 88-83 loss to the Connecticut Huskies in 2008.

•Ray Lopes has been promoted to associate head coach of the University of Idaho’s men’s bas team, the school announced.

Lopes joined head coach Don Verlin’s staff in 2008.

Prep volleyball

Alex Vera and Quinn Laurie each had seven kills to lead the Shadle Park Highlanders to a 25-16, 25-20, 25-16 victory over the host Rogers Pirates in a non-league match between Greater Spokane League teams. Aley Roberts led Rogers with eight kills.
