Kroc offers after-school program

The school year is in full swing, and some students may need a place to head to after school.

For Coeur d’Alene middle school students, the Salvation Army Kroc Center, 1765 W. Golf Course Road, could be just the place.

The Kroc Center is offering a new after-school program providing students with a safe location, along with time for homework, a chance for a snack, and even an opportunity for exercise and art. Students also will receive one-on-one time with instructors and counselors.

The center’s goal is to help students build interpersonal skills, including problem-solving and self-expression, to stress that the students must work hard toward their own goals, such as homework, and to encourage confidence and creativity, while having fun.

The program runs month to month. Students can register now, and scholarships are available.

Session 1 runs Sept. 28 to Oct. 30 and costs $150; session 2 runs Nov. 2 to Nov. 20 and costs $125; and session 3 runs Nov. 30 to Dec. 18 and costs $125. The program is Monday through Friday from 3 to 5:45 p.m.

To register and for more information, call (208) 667-1865 or visit www.kroccda.org.

High schools volley for a cure

Last Tuesday, Coeur d’Alene and Post Falls high schools played against each other in the third annual Volleyball for the Cure on Jordan Court at Coeur d’Alene High School.

The two North Idaho high schools set aside rivalries to raise money for the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation to fight breast cancer.

The fundraising volleyball match recognized breast cancer survivors and emphasized the need to raise money and awareness to battle the disease. On the day of the match, students participated in “Wear Pink” dress-up day, where they had the opportunity to earn prizes and learn about breast cancer.

Crain has recorded 11 CDs, composed two symphonies and often plays concerts in Asia and the U.S.
