Idaho bird plate has new look

OUTLICENSE – Idaho’s bluebird specialty auto license plate has a new look starting Monday.

The new bluebird design joins the other wildlife plates featuring elk and cutthroat trout.

The plates are available to vehicle owners for $35 in addition to normal registration fees at county assessor offices.

Ten percent of the cost for wildlife plates goes to the Department of Parks and Recreation for construction and maintenance of non-motorized boating facilities.

In 1993, the bluebird was the first critter to adorn the Idaho plates for fundraising authorized by the Legislature in 1992.

G.Loomis rods best in show

OUTCAST – Washington-based G.Loomis has a new series of rods named “best in show” at the recent ICAST trade show in Las Vegas.

The NRX series is offered in 13 casting and spinning models primarily for bass and 16 models of fly rods.

Keys to standing out in the crowd at the international show were the NRX’s all-new high modulus graphite plus a new resin that is lighter and helps make the rod stronger, said company spokesman John Mazurkiewicz.

Specially selected guides and reel seats for both bass and fly rods contribute to light weight, sensitivity and longer casting, he said.

Rod designer and casting champ Steve Rajeff said the rods are at least 15 percent lighter than similar GLX rods, and up to 20 percent stronger.

Yes, NRX cost more than the old GLX, with some rods retailing for more than $700.

Steelhead season opens for keeps

OUTCATCH – The lower Clearwater River’s catch-and-keep season opens today as a huge run of steelhead already has entered Idaho.

The steelhead harvest season opens today on the Clearwater downstream of the U.S. Highway 12 Memorial Bridge in Lewiston.

Anglers must release steelhead they catch in the rest of the Clearwater drainage until the harvest season opens there on Oct. 15.

The Snake and Salmon rivers open today for steelhead catch-and-release fishing. The harvest season opens Sept. 1.
