In brief: Long term care advocates sought
SPOKANE VALLEY – Long Term Care ombudsmen are needed to volunteer in the Spokane Valley area.
Long Term Care ombudsmen routinely visit nursing homes, adult family homes and boarding homes. They act as advocates for those who reside in the facilities and protect and promote the rights of residents. They are also welcome visitors to those who often receive few guests.
Spokane Valley currently has 59 adult family homes, 16 boarding homes and four nursing homes. At this time, the program currently has about 40 trained volunteers covering a five-county area.
Those interested in volunteering for the ombudsman program can attend a four-day training session, Sept. 23, 24, 28 and Oct. 1. Participants who attend the 30-hour training will receive certification as a long term care ombudsman.
The training is free, and lunch will be provided.
Following certification, an ombudsman can expect to spend approximately four hours per week visiting facilities in their area. Continuing education on issues regarding the program is provided at monthly meetings.
