Millwood Daze kicks off with 5K
Day’s events include yoga, face painting, movie
Folks will be milling about Millwood next Saturday, celebrating the small city and running for a good cause.
The Second Annual Millwood 5k Wellness Run will start at 9 a.m. to kick off a day of activities, “Millwood Daze,” that will end with a movie behind the Rocket Bakery at dusk.
“People get to see the heart of Millwood,” said Lon Page, an organizer of the event and owner of Anytime Fitness.
Page said the event started last year after a summer of road construction. Business owners in the area wanted to celebrate getting their streets back.
They decided to put on a fun run. Page said about 350 people showed up to participate. This year, he is expecting 500 to 600 participants.
He said this year he expects Secretary of State Sam Reed to participate in a short awards ceremony after the event at the Inland Empire Paper Co., which is owned by the Cowles Co., which also owns The Spokesman-Review. Page said that Reed once worked at the paper mill.
“I’ve got his registration,” Page said, explaining that Reed is expected to run.
Biplanes from Felts Field will fly over the city at the beginning of the run. There will be a pancake feed at the Masonic Temple, 3219 N. Argonne. Visitors to the event can pick up tickets from businesses around the neighborhood to turn in at Bottles, 3319 N. Argonne, for a drawing.
Other businesses will have giveaways or special deals.
Page said the run will benefit the West Valley Foundation, an organization that awards grants to students in the area to attend college.
The Mellow Monkey Yoga Studio, 9017 E. Euclid, will offer free post-run yoga classes, Apollo College will offer free massages and there will be face painting for the kids.
There will be no food vendors, but Page said there are local restaurants if you get hungry.
Page said he is excited about the energy businesses and residents have in Millwood.
“It’s a continuation of something that’s growing here in Millwood.”
