In brief: Dog park will be dedicated Friday
STATELINE – Spokane County will dedicate the off-leash dog area at Gateway Regional Park as the Patricia Simonet Laughing Dog Park with a leash cutting ceremony on Friday at 10 a.m.
The Spokane County Commissioners and officials from SCRAPS and the Spokane Parks, Recreation and Golf Department will participate. The park is just north of I-90 at the Stateline exit.
The park will honor the work, dedication and commitment by Simonet to SCRAPS, the Spokane Humane Society and the animal sheltering community. She is an applied animal behaviorist and research scientist. She counsels pets and their owners and studies the behaviors of animals.
Professional attire sought for needy
LIBERTY LAKE – The annual Best Foot Forward men’s and women’s career clothing drive will be held Sept. 10 through 19, to benefit the clothing bank at Spokane Valley Partners.
The goal of the drive is to provide professional clothes for job interviews and other dress occasions for those in need.
Community members can drop off appropriate clothing, at the Safeway in Liberty Lake. Accessories including shoes, purses, jewelry, neck ties and belts will also be accepted.

Councilwoman earns certificate
SPOKANE VALLEY – Spokane Valley Councilwoman Rose Dempsey recently earned a Certificate of Municipal Leadership from the Association of Washington Cities.
She completed more than 30 hours of training in budgeting, land-use planning, personnel and leadership. Dempsey holds city Council Position 3 and was elected to a four-year term in 2008.
Youth soccer offers scholarships
SPOKANE COUNTY – Funds are available to assist soccer players whose parents may be unemployed, disabled or on financial assistance.
The Spokane Junior Soccer and Valley Youth Soccer Leagues will provide assistance for players that will reduce the registration cost to half price for the seasonal year of youth soccer league play.
