Schools get hand from churches

Buildings in the Central Valley School District received a helping hand from two neighborhood churches last weekend.

More than 200 volunteers from Eastpoint Church and One Church descended upon schools in the district. Central Valley provided the materials.

About half of the volunteers were at the Early Learning Center on Barker Road painting and doing some groundskeeping. Volunteers painted the exteriors of University and Liberty Lake elementary schools. At Barker and Central Valley high schools, volunteers assembled sheds. At Progress Elementary, volunteers put together a storage chest and built an entryway bench.

“It’s a blessing for both of us,” said Matt King, a pastor at Eastpoint Church.

King said this was the second year the churches have teamed with the school district to complete projects on school grounds.

He said he was talking to one of the custodians about the jobs the volunteers were completing in about four hours.

“He said it would have taken him all summer,” King said. The work of the volunteers allowed the custodians to complete other tasks for the schools.

He hopes the churches can continue to volunteer at the schools in years to come.

“I certainly hope that every year we can be a part of it,” he said.

VCS graduate receives scholarship

Timofey Kozorezov, a 2008 graduate of Valley Christian School, was awarded a $2,000 scholarship from Triumph Aerostructures of Everett. The company’s program awards scholarships to their employees’ children to help them further their academic career.
