In brief: CdA Vikings defeat Post Falls Trojans in soccer

Drew Morgan’s goal at 33 minutes was all that Coeur d’Alene needed in a 2-0 win over visiting Post Falls in the Inland Empire League 5A boys soccer opener Monday.

Adam Borshiem, who assisted on Morgan’s goal, scored at 50 minutes. Borshiem has nine of the Vikings’ 10 goals in a 2-0-1 start.

Girls soccer: Caitlyn Nichols scored three first-half goals for Timberlake, which scored three times in the first nine minutes in a 7-1 Intermountain League win at Bonners Ferry.

College men’s soccer

Community Colleges of Spokane will open its season at 4 p.m. on Wednesday with a non-conference match at Whitworth University.

Among head coach Kenny Krestian’s top returnees from last year’s team, which finished 9-10-4 overall and 7-3-3 in the Eastern Region of the NWAACC, are forward Andrew Mastronardi and defender Graham Lundgren.

Mastronardi, from East Valley, was named the team’s offensive MVP as a freshman last spring, while Lundgren, who prepped at Moscow, Idaho, High, was named the Sasquatch’s defensive MVP.

Also back are midfielder Sam Palmer (Ferris) and defender Tyler Florez (Riveside), who were named to the NWAACC’s 2009 All-Eastern Region team.

Prep wrestling

Mead standout Jordan Rogers, who captured the silver medal in the Youth Olympic Games in Singapore in mid-August, has been named TheMat.com Wrestler of the Week for Aug. 17-23.

Rogers, a junior this year, lost to Resul Kalayci of Turkey in the gold-medal match.
