In brief: Lake City Timberwolves top North Central

Chris Wheelock and Mark Smyly scored 16 points apiece and the Lake City Timberwolves held off the North Central Indians 52-48 in a boys basketball season opener Tuesday at North Central.

Isiah Hollister topped the Indians with 11 points, while Jonathan Smith scored 10.

Elsewhere in nonleague play, Zach Lehman notched a double-double – 13 points, 10 rebounds – and the St. Maries Lumberjacks rolled to a 67-18 victory over the visiting Kootenai Warriors. … Chase Exkano poured in 22 points and Jake Wiley added 17 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Newport Grizzlies to a 63-43 win over the visiting Selkirk Rangers. Hunter Enyeart topped Selkirk with 24 points and eight rebounds. … Cody Unfred scored 17 to lead the Freeman Scotties past the visiting Kellogg Wildcats 50-35. … The Sandpoint Bulldogs used a 24-7 third-quarter run to beat the visiting Timberlake Tigers 58-29.

Girls basketball

Sydney Butler totaled 15 points, three assists and four steals to lead the Lake City Timberwolves to a 42-39 nonleague win over the North Central Indians at NC.

Rylie Holsinger topped NC with 11 points.

Elsewhere in nonleague action, Taylor Lewis scored 16 to power the Newport Grizzlies to a 63-19 win over the Selkirk Rangers at Newport. … The Freeman Scotties opened the season with a 50-11 romp over the visiting Kellogg Wildcats.

Volleyball

Mead High School graduate Alexis Olgard – a middle blocker – was named to the Pacific-10 Conference All-Freshman volleyball team in her first season with the Southern California Trojans.

Olgard’s teammate Falyn Fonoimoana – an outside hitter – was the conference’s freshman of the year.

Washington State Cougars’ Meagan Ganzer garnered honorable mention for the All-Pac-10 team.

Stanford outside hitter Alix Klineman was the Pac-10 player of the year, while California coach Rich Feller was named the coach of the year.

Awards

Whitworth senior guard Michael Taylor was named the Northwest Conference men’s basketball player of the week after averaging 19 points and five rebounds as the Pirates went 3-0 and won the Surf’s Up Classic in Hawaii.

Whitworth freshman forward Kayla Johnson garnered the award for women’s basketball after averaging 21.5 points and five rebounds in leading the Pirates to the Lady ’Yote Classic title.
