Woods extends his lead to four

Golf: Tiger Woods is starting to look like his old self at the Chevron World Challenge.

Woods got off to a blazing start Friday in Thousand Oaks, Calif., and a solid putting stroke enabled him to play bogey-free in the second round for a 6-under-par 66 that gave him a four-shot lead going into the weekend of his final tournament this year.

Woods was at 13-under 131, his best 36-hole score this year by six shots. Graeme McDowell was at 9-under 135, and will be paired with Woods in the final group today.

Yang leads LPGA: Amy Yang held firm atop the leaderboard at the LPGA Tour Championship, taking a three-shot lead by the time the second round was called for darkness.

Yang finished with a 3-under 69, playing through near-freezing temperatures at dawn at Grand Cypress Golf Club in Orlando, Fla. Maria Hjorth (68) and Seon Hwa Lee (73) were three shots back.

Wendy Ward of Edwall, Wash., shot a 79 after an opening-round 74.

Chicago Cubs great Ron Santo dies

Baseball: Ron Santo, one of the greatest players in Chicago Cubs history and a longtime WGN radio announcer, has died. He was 70.

Santo died in an Arizona hospital from complications of bladder cancer, according to WGN Radio. Santo was diagnosed with diabetes when he was 18 and later lost both legs to the disease.

He was a nine-time all-star in his 15-year career.

Yankees close in on Jeter, Rivera: Derek Jeter and the New York Yankees have made “significant or substantial progress” on a new contract, a person familiar with the negotiations told the Associated Press.

New York also moved close to an agreement with closer Mariano Rivera on a two-year contract for about $30 million. A finalized deal is expected within a few days.

K-Rod pleads guilty: Mets closer Francisco Rodriguez has pleaded guilty to attempted assault to settle charges he attacked his girlfriend’s father at Citi Field last season. His plea deal spares him jail time but sends him to additional anger management classes.

Knicks ride Stoudemire to win

NBA: Amare Stoudemire had 34 points and 10 assists to power the New York Knicks to their eighth win in nine games, a 100-92 victory over the New Orleans Hornets at New Orleans.

Trevor Ariza had a season-high 21 points for New Orleans.

• Lakers stop skid: Kobe Bryant scored 22 points, Pau Gasol added 16 despite a strained left hamstring, and the Los Angeles Lakers easily snapped a four-game losing streak with a 113-80 victory over the Sacramento Kings in Los Angeles.

• Garnett, Rondo pace Celtics win: Kevin Garnett scored 20 points with a season-high 17 rebounds, and Rajon Rondo scored 12 and had 19 assists to lead the Boston Celtics to their sixth straight win, a 104-92 victory over the visiting Chicago Bulls.

• Raptors overpower Thunder: Andrea Bargnani had 26 points and 12 rebounds for his first double-double of the season and Leandro Barbosa scored a season-high 22 points to lead the Toronto Raptors’ 111-99 victory over the Oklahoma City Thunder at Toronto.

Oklahoma City’s Kevin Durant missed his second straight game with a sprained left knee.

• Wizards shut down Blazers: The Washington Wizards held the Portland Trail Blazers to 10 points in the third quarter and went on to an 83-79 victory at Washington.

NCAA denies ASU’s bowl appeal

College football: Arizona State officials say the NCAA has denied the school’s waiver request for a bowl bid.

The Sun Devils improved their record to 6-6 with Thursday night’s 30-29 double overtime win over Arizona in Tucson. Per NCAA rules, a team playing two Football Championship Subdivision schools must win seven games to qualify for a bowl.

Arizona State officials asked the NCAA to make its two FCS wins count toward bowl eligibility because San Jose State backed out of a scheduled game this season and was replaced by Portland State.

Canucks blank defending champions

NHL: Roberto Luongo made 32 saves for his second shutout of the season and 53rd overall, leading the Vancouver Canucks to their fourth straight victory, 3-0 over Chicago.

Stanley Cup champion Chicago suffered its eighth regulation loss at home, matching its regular-season total from last season.

Stanford, Notre Dame advance to final

Miscellany: Camille Levin scored in the 48th minute and Stanford beat Boston College 2-0 to advance to the NCAA Women’s College Cup final at Cary, N.C.

The Cardinal (23-0-2), which reached the championship game for the second year in a row, next plays Notre Dame on Sunday. The Fighting Irish (20-2-2) beat Ohio State 1-0.

• Serbia, France split Davis Cup openers: Novak Djokovic brought Serbia back into the Davis Cup final against France by defeating Gilles Simon 6-3, 6-1, 7-5 to tie the opening singles 1-1 at Belgrade, Serbia.

Gael Monfils cruised past Janko Tipsarevic 6-1, 7-6 (4), 6-0 to give France the opening singles.

• Riesch takes downhill: Maria Riesch of Germany captured a World Cup downhill at Lake Louise, Alberta, holding off her best friend, Lindsey Vonn, and snapping her record win streak.

Riesch finished the course in 1 minute, 28.96 seconds, just 0.12 ahead of Vonn, the top American finisher. Elisabeth Goergl of Austria was third in 1:29.17.

Strong winds forced the cancellation of a men’s World Cup downhill race at Beaver Creek, Colo., and it remains unknown when or where the run will be rescheduled.
