In brief: Abuse prevention groups get grants

RIVERSIDE – The Exchange Club of Spokane Foundation recently donated $15,000 to three area child abuse prevention organizations.

The Vanessa Behan Crisis Nursery, Children’s Home Society and Spokane Child Abuse and Prevention Network each received a check for $5,000 to offer additional parenting classes they are now unable to fund. The classes promote nurturing and bonding, increase knowledge of parenting and child development, enhance positive family functioning and increase social and emotional competence.

The National Exchange Club, of which the Spokane club is a member, was founded in 1948 to make the community a better place to live through programs of service in community service, youth activities and child abuse prevention.

SPOKANE COUNTY – All state-run liquor stores will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday. They will be closed on Saturday, Christmas Day.

Contract liquor stores may be open on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Individual stores should be contacted for holiday hours.

County libraries to close for holiday

SPOKANE COUNTY – All Spokane County Libraries will be closed on Friday and Saturday, in observance of Christmas.

Regular library hours will resume on Sunday or at Spokane County libraries without Sunday hours, regular hours will resume on Monday.

Also, in observance of the New Year’s holiday, all Spokane County libraries will close at 5 p.m. on Dec. 31. The libraries will also be closed Jan. 1.

Curbside pick-up for yuletide trees

SPOKANE COUNTY – Although the holidays are barely here, the time to take down the Christmas tree is just around the corner.

The city of Spokane Solid Waste Management Department offers free curbside pickup for its customers. Once decorations have been removed, residents can place their trees alongside their garbage carts on their regularly scheduled garbage pickup days. Trees collected at curbside will be chipped up and composted. For information call Solid Waste Management at (509) 625-7878.

City and county residents can take their undecorated, unflocked trees for disposal to their local waste removal stations including the Waste-to-Energy Facility, 2900 S. Geiger Blvd.; the Spokane Valley Transfer Station, 3941 N. Sullivan Road; or the North Side Transfer Station, 22123 Elk-Chattaroy Road.

Trees taller than 6 feet should be cut in half. Trees taken to the local facilities are subject to a $5 minimum charge for clean green disposal; they will be composted.

Free meal Monday at Cheney UCC

CHENEY – On Monday, Feed Cheney will provide a free, hot dinner at the Cheney United Church of Christ, 423 N. 6th St., from 5 to 6 p.m. Dinner is free and open to the public and no qualifying paperwork is required.

Groceries will be available for those in need to take home after Monday’s dinner.

The monthly dinners are an outreach activity of the Cheney United Church of Christ, in partnership with the Women’s and Children’s Free Restaurant, St. Paul’s Episcopal Church and Eastern Washington University’s Lutheran Church.

Valley offices to close for holidays

SPOKANE VALLEY – The city of Spokane Valley will close its offices on Friday and on Dec. 31 for the holidays. There will be a council meeting at 6 p.m. Tuesday at City Hall, 11707 E. Sprague Ave.
