In brief: Council schedules winter retreat
SPOKANE VALLEY – The Spokane Valley City Council has scheduled a daylong winter retreat Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at CenterPlace, 2426 N. Discovery Place.
The topics for discussion will include the Sprague/Appleway Revitalization Plan, the city’s policy of full-width paving after sewer work and the goals of the council.
The meeting is open to the public.

CVHS hosting Chinese culture fair
VERADALE – Celebrate the Year of the Tiger next Saturday with the Chinese New Year Culture Fair at Central Valley High School, 821 S. Sullivan Road.
Beginning at 1 p.m., visitors can try their hand at Chinese calligraphy, paper cutting and making spring flowers, buy arts and crafts and taste Chinese cuisine. Special activities and games will be available for children.
There will be a Chinese variety show at 3:30 p.m., which will include ribbon dancing, martial arts, Chinese opera and performances by the Spokane Chinese Language School students.
Admission is free to the culture fair and $8 for the variety show. Tickets can also be purchased at the door, in advance at Best Asian Market at 1801 E. Sprague Ave., or by phone (509) 720-8825.

Boy Scouts plan centennial events
SPOKANE VALLEY – The Boy Scouts of America celebrates its 100th year on Monday. Many centennial celebrations are planned throughout the year with events such as planting an official 100th anniversary tree from the Arbor Day Foundation, the Inland Northwest Council Leadership Breakfast on Feb. 26 at the Spokane Convention Center and the Inland Northwest Council Camporee on May 22 at the Spokane County Fair and Expo Center.
