Lindemann gets Pac-10 honor

Men’s basketball: Former Washington State University student-athlete Paul Lindemann will be among 10 greats inducted into the Pac-10 Men’s Basketball Hall of Honor, the league announced Friday. The induction ceremony will take place March 13 during the Pac-10 Hall of Honor luncheon.

Lindemann had a storied career during one of the highest points of WSU basketball. He was a member of three of Jack Friel’s most successful teams from 1939-41, compiling a career record of 72-26. He was also the leader of perhaps the most accomplished team in school history.

Lindemann led the Cougars to their first NCAA tournament appearance as a 6-foot-7 center on the 1941 squad.

At the tournament, the Cougars turned to Lindemann as he scored 26 points in WSU’s 48-39 win against Creighton. The next night the senior paced WSU with 14 points in a 64-53 upset against previously unbeaten Arkansas for the West Regional title.

In the school’s only appearance in the NCAA championship game, WSU could not overcome the East champion Wisconsin Badgers. WSU fell 39-34 in the title game, but the feat has not been surpassed.

Lindemann died in 1990 at the age of 72.

Super Bowl: A Louisiana high school student says he was sent home for wearing an Indianapolis Colts jersey after the principal encouraged students to wear jerseys supporting the New Orleans Saints in the Super Bowl.

The American Civil Liberties Union of Louisiana has faxed principal Steve Vampran a letter supporting 17-year-old Brandon Frost. State ACLU director Marjorie Esman says she wants Frost’s record cleared of any discipline stemming from the incident.

Frost says he moved from Indianapolis about three years ago.

Rodriguez’s 500th HR sells

Baseball: The ball Alex Rodriguez hit for his 500th home run has sold at auction for $103,579.

SCP Auctions said Thursday the buyer decided to remain anonymous.

The ball, hit off Kansas City’s Kyle Davies, was recovered by a college student at Yankee Stadium on Aug. 4, 2007.
