WVHS drama offers ‘Faustus’

The drama department at West Valley High School will present a modernized version of “Faustus,” Tuesday though next Saturday at 7 p.m. in the school auditorium, 8301 W. Buckeye Ave. Admission is free.

The play revolves around a ruthless and ambitious music producer, Joanna Faustas, who sells her soul to Lucifer in exchange for success, power and wealth.

The students performing in the play are: Sam Walters as Adolf Valdes; Kayla Hutnik as Brooke Gardner; Blake Baxter, Tara Carpenter, Devin Devine and Trevor Ebel as the chorus; Jake McKinsey as Chuckles; James Ratzlaff as Daniel Wagner; Tim Stickney as Douglas Brewer; Wyatt Beaulieu as the concert emcee and Frank Sinatra; Brianna Stansberry as Estel Faustas; Patrick Stickney as Evil Spirit; Shaley Martin/Haley Galik as Giovanna Donitelli; Cindy Kunz as Good Angel; Austin Benz as Har-D; Michael McClellan as Jester; Amelia Ingle as Joanna Faustus; Tycie Driskill as Kaleesha Brown; Jake Henthorn as Lucifer; Josh Becker as Ludwig Cornelius; Anthony Phillips as Mephostophilis; TJ McMillan as Old Man; Aaron Maddox as Robin Ambrose; Devin Devine as the Seven Deadly Sins; Darby Moore, Jordyn Toulou, Hailey Warren and Olivia Bergman as concert dancers; Kayla Hutnik, Tara Carpenter, Trevor Ebel, Brianna Stansberry, Shaley Martin, Cindy Kunz, Tim Stickney, Aaron Maddox, Casey Hellman, Donovan LaBella, Austin Benz, Patrick Stickney, James Ratzlaff, Sam Walters, Haley Galik and Blake Baxter as the ensemble.

Jazz Under the Stars

The Central Valley Band and Color Guard Boosters will sponsor “Jazz Under the Stars,” a jazz concert, dessert and silent auction Feb. 19 from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. in the Central Valley High School Commons, 821 S. Sullivan Road.

Proceeds from the event will go to help maintain the band and color guard programs.

Tickets for the event are $10 for adults, $5 for students and $15 at the door.

Fundraiser for Haiti

Students in the Pioneer School, 618 N. Sullivan Road held a bake sale to raise funds for the Haiti earthquake relief efforts of the American Red Cross.

The bake sale raised $210 and area companies matched the students’ funds for a total of $420.

“The children enjoyed baking brownies, Rice Krispies treats pumpkin muffins and other treats,” said Betty Wolf, the founding director of the school.

Online capital facilities survey

The Capital Facilities Planning Committee of the Central Valley School District has posted an online survey for public input to help develop the district’s 25-year Capital Facilities Plan.

Parents, students and residents of the district are invited to complete the survey through Friday.

Debate tournament

Students from Washington, Idaho, Oregon and Montana will attend the annual Thomas S. Foley Honorary Forensics Tournament which concludes today at University High School.

The students met Friday at WSU Spokane and the Thomas S. Foley United States Courthouse and at U-Hi in the Central Valley School District to compete in a student congress competition, an international diplomacy event in which students negotiate in one of three languages – German, French and Spanish, several speech and debate activities and traditional forensics events.

The competition will conclude today with a ceremony to present the Thomas S. Foley Speaker’s Award and the Thomas S. Foley Ambassador’s Award.
