Three things we’ll be talking about this week

1 The Winter Olympics, from nearby Vancouver, B.C., will officially begin Friday, with the Opening Ceremony and the lighting of the Olympic flame. Medal events begin on Saturday, with competitions in ski jumping, alpine skiing, speed skating, biathlon and freestyle skiing. For schedules, results and whatnot, visit spokesman.com/Olympics.

2Sunday is Valentine’s Day, the day we acknowledge the ones we love. As a holiday, it’s old-school, dating back to 496 A.D., when Pope Gelasius I set aside a day honoring an early Christian martyr named Valentine. History aside, it’s time to think ahead. There’s still plenty of time to make a card, order some flowers or buy a little trinket for the one you love.

3Or maybe your Valentine’s plans will include a little entertainment. Art Garfunkel, half of the duo Simon and Garfunkel, will perform Saturday and Sunday at Northern Quest Casino. Or, if something funny is more your mood, the INB Performing Arts Center is playing host to the foul-mouthed puppet stars of the Broadway smash “Avenue Q” Thursday through Sunday.
