Maloney sparks NIC

North Idaho took advantage of Southern Nevada miscues in an eight-run second inning that earned the Cardinals a split of a Scenic West Athletic Conference softball doubleheader on Friday in St. George, Utah.

Laura Maloney, who hit two home runs and drove in three runs in a first-game loss, and Briggett Plenger had two-run singles in the inning in which the Coyotes committed two errors and two passed balls, leading to seven unearned runs.

Central Valley grad Alyssa Erickson pitched the win.

NIC (4-8, 1-3 SWAC) had lost the first three games in the conference-opening series, including 10-9 in eight innings in Friday’s opener.

Tiffany Lucero singled in the winning run for CSN (7-3, 3-1).
