Grizzlies sink EWU

Montana shot 44.4 percent from the field and outrebounded Eastern Washington 42-37 en route to a 75-60 upset victory in Big Sky Conference action Saturday in Missoula.

Julie Piper scored a team-high 20 points and added nine rebounds for the Eagles (15-9, 8-3). Kyla Evans added 13 points and four assists but was shut out by the Grizzlies (13-11, 8-4) in the second half.

Montana erased a 34-31 deficit at the end of the first half, came back to take the lead at the start of the second, and pushed the advantage over the Eagles to as high as 16 points.

Gonzaga 75, San Diego 61: Courtney Vandersloot scored 18 points and added nine assists as the Bulldogs (21-4, 10-0) stayed unbeaten in the West Coast Conference with a victory over the Toreros (14-11, 6-5) in San Diego.

Vandersloot became the WCC’s all-time assist leader, surpassing the Toreros’ Amanda Rego, with 663 career assists. Adding 20 points for the Bulldogs with a career-high six 3-pointers was Tiffanie Shives on 7-of-13 shooting.

Gonzaga opened the contest with an 18-7 run, leading the Toreros 42-28 by halftime.

After four straight points from Morgan Henderson and a free throw brought USD to within single digits of the Bulldogs, GU went on a 12-5 run in the final 6:01 to close out the game.

Idaho 74, Hawaii 59: Yinka Olorunnife recorded her 15th career double-double, scoring 25 points and hauling in 14 rebounds as the host Vandals (6-17, 4-6) upended the Rainbow Wahine (9-15, 3-8) in Moscow. Aiding Olorunnife was junior Rachele Kloke, who tallied 19 points on 8-of-17 shooting.

After Hawaii took a 34-30 lead early in the second half, the Vandals responded with a 20-5 run to retake the lead for good.

Over a span of 5:34, Idaho went 8 of 10 from the floor to complete its biggest run against a WAC opponent this season.

The Wahine cut the lead to five with 3:48 remaining, but Shaena Kuehu – who finished with 12 points – sealed the game with a three-point play.

Whitworth 62, Pacific Lutheran 57: Cassie Pilkinton had 16 points and seven rebounds, Liz Horiatis added 11 points and 12 boards and the Pirates (12-11, 8-6) went on an 11-2 run over the final 3:33 to earn the comeback victory over the Lutes (7-16, 5-9) in Northwest Conference action at Whitworth Fieldhouse.

PLU took a 32-31 lead into halftime, led by Sara Backstrom, who finished with 20 points, but struggled in the second half. Melissa Pixler added 14 points for the Lutes.

With the Lutes leading 55-51 on a bucket by Backstrom, the Pirates rallied to take the lead on back-to-back baskets by Pilkinton and Leah Pomante. The run was capped by a pair of free throws from Pomante with 35 seconds left.

CC Spokane 78, Treasure Valley 53: The weekend’s pair of home games for CCS had plenty of bearing on whether or not the playoffs would be within reach. After knocking off Blue Mountain CC on Friday, the Sasquatch (15-7, 7-5) finished the weekend sweep with a 78-53 victory over the Chukars (14-8, 6-5) at Spokane Falls CC.

Brooke Randall and Meghan Eisenmann did the bulk of the scoring for the Sasquatch, combining for 43 points, with Randall hitting 7 of 8 from 3-point range and finishing with 23 points.

CCS opened the game by shooting 33.3 percent in the first half.

The Sasquatch rallied to shoot 60.7 percent after the break, scoring 46 points in the second half to push the lead from nine to as high as 31 when they took a 63-32 advantage.
