Finished Purdue junior forward Robbie Hummel will miss the remainder of the season after tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee. The injury occurred during the first half of No. 3 Purdue’s 59-58 win over Minnesota Wednesday. Hummel is second on the team with 15.7 points and 6.9 rebounds per game.

Agreed The Arizona Cardinals have rewarded coach Ken Whisenhunt for leading the franchise out of pro football oblivion with a new four-year contract that runs through the 2013 season, with a team option for 2014. Cardinals general manager Rod Graves also got a new deal that runs through 2013.

Passed Oregon Tech basketball coach Danny Miles has moved past Bobby Knight on the college basketball career wins list. The NAIA Hustlin’ Owls defeated the College of Idaho 64-63 Wednesday to give Miles win No. 903 in his nearly 40-year career. Miles is tied with Herb Magee, the Philadelphia University coach who passed Knight this week to become the all-time winningest coach at NCAA schools.

Skipping Olympic gold medalist Evan Lysacek will not defend his title at next month’s world championships in Turin, Italy. Lysacek said he is not retiring. Five-time U.S. ice dance champions Tanith Belbin and Ben Agosto also will bypass the worlds and are expected to retire from competitive skating.

Suspended St. Louis Blues forward Cam Janssen has been suspended five games without pay for a hit to the head on Washington’s Matt Bradley on Feb. 13.

Extended Forward Rene Bourque has signed a $20 million, six-year contract extension with the NHL’s Calgary Flames. Bourque has already set a career high for points this season with 41, including 18 goals.

•The Minnesota Wild have signed popular winger Cal Clutterbuck to a three-year extension. He quickly became a fan favorite last season, when he set the NHL’s single-season hits mark with 356. He leads the league again this season.

Waived The Washington Wizards waived center Zydrunas Ilgauskas, and his old teammates want him to return to Cleveland. Ilgauskas, who was acquired from Cleveland on Feb. 17 as part of the three-team trade that sent Antawn Jamison to the Cavaliers, didn’t play for Washington. The 34-year-old is averaging 7.5 points and 5.3 rebounds off the bench this season in the NBA.

Died NASCAR crew chief J.C. Elder, known as “Suitcase Jake,” has died. He was 73. Elder was the crew chief for David Pearson’s 1968 and 1969 series champions and directed Dale Earnhardt to his first Cup victory in 1979 at Bristol.
