Costco-sold salami pulled
PORTLAND – Health officials say eight people from Oregon and 14 from Washington were sickened in a salmonella outbreak that led to the recall of more than 1 million pounds of pepper-coated salami.
Officials say 184 people in 38 states have gotten sick since July. Nobody has died.
Health officials said for months they couldn’t find the cause, but finally got a break when they noticed several patients had shopped at Costco in Washington.
Comparing shopping records, they say, pointed them toward salami products.
The Rhode Island food company Daniele International said Saturday it recalled the meat as a precaution but evidence hasn’t yet pointed to its plants.
The company has set up a hot line for consumers or distributors at (888) 345-4160.
