Cafe offers fresh look, great food

Herb Huseland

Fearlessly, I decided Monday to check out our newest cafe in town. Formerly known as Terry’s Cafe, it has been transformed into a clean, pleasant eatery, now known as The Bay Cafe. After introducing myself to Dean Knowles and his trusty sidekick Sherry, I asked about their backgrounds. Dean, it turns out, has spent the last six years cooking at Jimmy C’s, while Sherry worked at the same place for two years. Doing his own thing appealed to him, and a new look in Bayview is born.

Visiting with waitress Sherry, it hit me that Dean cooks everything from scratch; if he were a chicken, he would lay his own eggs. A purist to the hilt, when he serves biscuits and gravy, you get homemade biscuits and gravy.

They have fresh scones and a menu to die for. I chose the omelet with country-fried spuds. I got a a huge omelet with enough country fries to feed the neighborhood. Instead of toast, I chose a biscuit. Good move. It was so flaky it almost crumbled in my hand, but not before I was able to slather it with real butter.

The building that previously housed Terry’s Cafe is clean and houses some great food. I recommend it for great breakfasts and lunches. I can hardly wait for my next trek into culinary delight at our new place in town.

Next door at Ralph’s Internet Cafe, new things are happening, too. Ralph is now featuring fresh-baked pizza. You can order all of the favorites that used to be served at the Captain’s Wheel. Eat it there or take it out; they will even deliver locally.
